This class is geared for the beginner and also for the person who wishes to brush up on basic painting techniques and studio practices. Using theory and observation we begin by focusing our work on tonal values the underlying structure of a painting. Learning is guided by individual assistance and in class demonstrations. We will discuss color mixing and various aspects of paint application, brushwork, atmospheric effects, creating depth and the feeling of light. Lectures and group critiques will reinforce our study and will help to open a dialogue for our progress. Prerequisite: None; though some drawing experience will be helpful.

Laura Nothern joins PNCA after studying at Studio Escalier in Paris, France. She specializes in a Contemporary Classical approach to drawing and painting the figure. She brings more than 30 years of experience to her classrooms. Ms Nothern has been exhibiting her paintings in US galleries since 1996 and her work can be found in private collections internationally.
