Children's Book Portfolio

Pnca_ee9c38ef-a3c4-4116-af88-beff363855ed_medium

In this studio class, participants will become familiar with classic and contemporary children’s book illustration. We will study current children’s book markets, including picture books, mass market, young adult novels, and fantasy. We will discuss what makes a piece of art successful and appropriate for a children’s book by focusing on technique, composition, atmosphere, setting, and visual narrative. Students will finish 4-8 pieces for their portfolio, and will have the chance to develop their own stories and characters.

Instructor Victoria Jamieson is a children’s book author and illustrator. Her work has been published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, Bloomsbury, Dial Books for Young Readers, and Trellis Publishing. She also worked for many years in the art department of HarperCollins Children’s Books where she was responsible for, among other things, finding and hiring illustrators for book projects. She holds a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MA from the University of Sydney, Australia.
