Writing + Illustrating Children's Books
This course focuses on both the writing and illustrating aspects of childrens books. In this class you will gain a familiarity with classic and contemporary picture books, and closely examine the unique structure of the 32-page picture book. over the duration of the course, participants will create their own draft book complete with manuscript and sketches. In-class critiques will focus on character, plot, and pacing- both in terms of illustration and in writing. Prerequisite: None.
Instructor Victoria Jamiesonis a childrens book author and illustra- tor. Her work has been published by HarperCollins Childrens Books, Bloomsbury, Dial Books for Young Readers, and Trellis Publishing. She also worked for many years in the art department of HarperCollins Childrens Books where she was responsible for, among other things, finding and hiring illustrators for book projects. She holds a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MA from the University of Sydney, Australia.
Instructor: Victoria Jamieson
Victoria Jamieson is the author and illustrator of several books for children. Her graphic novel, ROLLER GIRL, was a 2016 Newbery Honor book and a New York Times Bestseller, among other accolades. When she’s not writing, drawing, or teaching, she can be found hanging out with her husband and baby, or skating with the Rose City Rollers as Winnie the Pow.
