Pre-College Summer 2020
Dear Friends, Artists and Learners,
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are currently revising our Summer term. Some classes may be cancelled this term, while others will move to an online format.
Please take care of yourselves and others during this trying time.
This Summer, we welcome you as a high school student to spend up to five weeks in the studios of Pacific Northwest College of Art immersed in a studio classroom environment while learning core elements of design, art, and illustration. We also offer the opportunity to build your portfolio and develop a strategy for applying to art colleges. We offer a four-week Foundation Intensive program plus several one-week Studio Sessions. Each of these can be taken separately, or you can combine up to two classes for five weeks in the studio.
Our four-week Pre-College Foundation Intensive program lets you experience first hand what your Foundation year at art school will be like. You bring your imagination, and we’ll offer training in and access to 2D, 3D, and digital tools to turn your ideas into finished works.
Our one-week Studio Sessions give you additional time and support to further develop your work by focusing on the discipline that interests you most. Choices for Studio Session Week One (July 27-July 31) include: Printmaking: Screenprinting + Relief, Figure Painting, and Art + Claiming Voice. Choices for Studio Session Week Two (August 3-August 7) include Animated Arts: 2D or Illustration: Comics + Characters.
Our campus is a space created by artists for artists. While students are here, we introduce them to the Portland art scene, include them in PNCA events, and connect them with mentors who can guide them outside of the classroom. We have a team of people who are on standby to talk through how to choose the right art school and go through the actual steps it takes to document work and assemble a portfolio. Our instructors are generous artists who will also be glad to offer a safe haven where students can talk through concerns or questions they may have about being a professional artist.

The Pre-College Program is for high school students dedicated to expanding their art training, developing a portfolio, and experiencing a professional art college environment. We offer classes throughout the year and in the summer the Pre-College Studios welcome high school students from across the country.
